Anyone paying attention has to be shocked by what is happening to people in the Philippines. CNN carried a report last evening (11.11.13) that said had a similar hurricane struck the state of Florida, more than 11,000,000 people would be displaced and about 1/3 of the state would have gone under water. In these days of satellite phones and digital connections, it is very unfortunate that we had to wait for four days to see the full extent of the damage.
The national television newscasts devoted a lot of time to the disaster Monday evening and there will be more throughout the week. The crisis, however, is right now: people without water, very little if any food and lots of injuries, plus a lot more ways to get injuries in the shattered town of Techloban (we don’t even know about the many other areas, including islands, where extensive damage has occurred). No matter how much you see, no matter how many reports are offered, it can’t be grasped by looking at it from a distance. One report that struck me for telling the story simply and very strongly was posted on the NY Times, today, (11.12.13). It is not the kind of polished, professional presentation we get on the network news shows, which gives it all the more impact. DON’T WATCH IT if you are bothered significantly by the sight of dead bodies.
The TerryReport will have more on the aftermath of the typhoon/hurricane in the coming hours and days.
