The clock is ticketing down on the whole student loan mess. For profit schools exploit both the student and the government's willingness to shovel money out the door. Not for profit colleges have ruthlessly exploited the good faith of students and parents to keep raising tuition so they can buy climbing walls, indoor pools and other unnecessary amenities that appeal to students but, in most cases, add almost nothing to the learning experience. The goodies help attract students, plus keep the rankings up in the US News annual report, all of which helps to keep the money flowing. Meanwhile, more and more actual teaching is turned over to adjunct, part time, underpaid, faculty who get no benefits and not even office space to meet with students
This whole thing looks like a house of cards that could come tumbling down in a light breeze. Yet, America's system of higher education cannot be allowed to fail, the establishment would come to the rescue overnight. What would that say about the notion of "education" if those who provide it can't make reasonable decisions themselves? It wil be blamed on naive students who foolishly took out too many loans. Plus, blame will be shifted from the non-profit schools to the greedy for profit sector, with the non-profit schools talking up the blame for the others. Something or someone will be found to take the blame other than America’s colleges.
I smell a big bailout coming down the road. Hold on to your wallet....
