Here is the central question about first term senator, and budding presidential candidate, Ted Cruz: he knows how to make enemies, does he know how to make friends?

He has been in the U.S. Senate less than two years, but Cruz is treated like an invading germ attack by many fellow senators. That’s not an exaggeration if the media reports are correct. Here is a clip from the end of one report in the Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Cruz is also making some progress working across the aisle. He joined Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.) as a co-sponsor on her military-sexual-assault bill that narrowly failed last month. His bill demanding the Obama administration bar a visa for Iran's new United Nations ambassador—because of his affiliation with the 1979 American embassy seizure passed unanimously because of an unlikely partnership with Sen. Charles Schumer (D., N.Y.) and was signed by Mr. Obama Friday.

"I'll work with Democrats, Republicans, independents, libertarians," Mr. Cruz says. "Heck I'll even work with Martians to get this country back on track."

Some fellow Senators still apparently aren't ready. After a recent floor vote, Mr. Cruz entered an elevator occupied by three lawmakers; none greeted him. After a silent ride to the basement for the subway, Mr. Cruz said: "Have a great day."

The others rushed out, saying nothing.

The story in the WSJ makes it clear that Cruz had been building up his public image at the expense of Republicans themselves. He even attacked a Republican sponsored immigration bill in the House as “amnesty”. He refuses to “play the game” and insists on taking actions that his fellow Republicans say hurt them and their party. Can you be seen as an idiot inside the Senate and a very smart leader outside? Perhaps. It depends, in part, on how far you go with the “hate Washington” movement.  If you think being against the national government is a full time and wonderful task, then being disliked in official circles can be seen as a plus. If you want to get anything done among the 99 other senators, well, being their sworn enemy ain’t go grand.

One thing is certain: if Cruz ever makes it to the White House without making amends to his fellow senators, then a lot of people on Capitol Hill would have grand time giving him a very hard time. They would undermine him in every way possible. In fact, his inability to get along with others would be a prime argument against his ever being elected in the first place. The article makes clear that Cruz is generally shunned in the senate, a place where social relations are very important.
