This is the view from behind as the horses try to find and settle into their positions on the first run around the home stretch.

Kicking up dirt, headed for the first turn, the horses have not yet aligned into their running positions for the turn and the back stretch. Still anyone’s race at this point.

Not a great photo, but it shows what’s happening: California Chrome (green topped helmet) is very well positioned near the lead and on the inside of the last turn, ready, if able, to charge for the win. The jockey said later that he wasn’t at all sure that Chrome would give that extra burst of speed.

California Chrome lunges out of the shot and into the lead on the home stretch of the Preakness. There would be one more challenge for the lead, but Chrome would answer with a final burst of speed that ended all doubts.

Down the stretch, firmly into the lead and on to glory

The jockey gets some water. California Chrome would have the saddle pulled off and head to the barns soon afterward.

Trophy time. The 77 year old trainer with Governor O’Malley and Bob Costas of NBC Sports, a fixture at the tripple crown races for years.

The final act: painting California Chrome’s colors where they will stay for one year until the next Preakness race.

Three friends, Elizabeth, Alex and Janet, leave the track to wait for a bus for almost one hour before a slow ride back to the parking lot.

California Chrome gets star treatment from NBC Sports on the way to the stables.

Jockey Victor Espinoza celebrates in front of the Preakness crowd on top California Chrome, winner at the Preakness and Kentucky Derby.
